The R.H. Ballantyne House at 210A Clyde Road, Fendalton has been listed for sale by Harcourts. Extended and rennovated in keeping with the mid-century style, the house sits on a 2642m² riverside section. The property was last sold in August 2016 for NZ$3.1M.
The house was built in 1958-59 for Ronald Ballantyne (of department store fame), which places it just four years after Warren's return from the UK, and three years after Dorset Street Flats. What is remarkable is the progression and complexity demonstrated in such a short time, with elements clearly learned from the Flats, and developed into what was fast becoming the "Christchurch Style".
Warren writes in his autobiography:
The house we designed for Ronald Ballantyne was essentially Danish in character: a square of living room, dining and kitchen, a long bedroom wing with a connecting flat-roofed entrance link, all now in the usual vocabulary of white concrete block and dark grey tiles.
Exquisite!
