A much-admired Mid-century townhouse designed by Sir Miles Warren in the mid '70s has been listed for sale.
The architect's enduring work is always highly sought after, and this townhouse, in Merivale, Christchurch has featured in several magazines and books over the years.
Listing agent Nick Cowdy of Cowdy Real Estate, himself a Mid-century aficionado, says the layout of this particular townhouse is a little different from others the architect has designed.
"This one is more extravagant," he says. "Usually, the townhouses have bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs, and the downstairs is all living area. This one is wider and has bedrooms and a bathroom downstairs as well as the living area, with a mezzanine above.”
Cowdy says the townhouse, within the JJ Allison Flats development, is a particularly "beautiful" example of the architect's work, and has featured in COCA Mid-century Art and Design tours.
"The owner has undertaken a considered renovation with the help of Blair Paterson of Colab Architects, with stunning courtyard landscaping by landscape architect Robert Watson."
The house features a modern kitchen with breakfast bar, extensive double glazing with new joinery, and a heat pump. The mezzanine space is adaptable – it could be another bedroom or an office.
Sir Miles Warren's townhouses reflect the modernism espoused by the "Christchurch School", an architectural movement that was considered highly unconventional back in the 1950s and ‘60s.
The Merivale townhouse, at 16 Office Road, which has an RV of $590,000 will be auctioned on March 8, 2020.
