REBUILD UPDATE
The Japanese maple tree planted by Miles Warren in the courtyard of his flat, still thriving despite the hive of activity surrounding it. Work has begun on restoring the garden of Miles Warren's former flat at 4 Dorset Street. In 2014, Miles wrote:
"My early garden making was much more modest. The first was a little courtyard garden in flats I designed in Dorset Street, Christchurch, in 1956. It had a brick terrace with a long narrow pool on one side and an L-shaped garden on the other. The planting was much influenced by an article in the Architectural Review on architectural plans and included yucca, Agave americana, Macleaya cordata, tobacco Nicotiana, Euphorbia, and one tree, a crab apple, Malus domestica." Planning is under the expert guidance of landscaper Robert Watson, who, as a trustee of the Ohinetahi Charitable Trust and caretaker of the Warren Trust garden at 65 Cambridge Terrace, is eminently qualified for the task. Congratulations to the Dorset Street Flats project team at Young Architects for winning at the 2021 Canterbury/Westland ADNZ Resene Architectural Design Awards. Greg Young and Andy McLeod took honours for their two mid-century modern-inspired new builds on the hills of Christchurch. This house, titled "The Christchurch Style Revival", on Moncks Spur, won the couple the 2021 Regional Residential Interiors Award. Greg Young also received a Commended Award in the Residential Alterations and Additions category for his work on the project. This house, titled "Neo MCM", in Cashmere, won the pair a Commended Residential Interiors Award.
